GOP President-elect Donald Trump and former Democratic President Barack Obama captured attention online after engaging in lighthearted banter at former Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s funeral service in Washington, D.C.

Despite their long-standing political rivalry, the two were seen enjoying a friendly conversation alongside several former U.S. presidents and first ladies who gathered to honor Carter’s legacy.
Notably, former first lady Michelle Obama was absent from the ceremony.
Social media users quickly expressed their astonishment over the surprisingly amicable interaction between the two political adversaries.
“Trump and Obama sitting next to each other was not on the 2025 bingo card,” commented one user.
Another user remarked on Obama’s apparent friendliness towards someone he often criticizes in public.
“Obama is being quite cordial with someone he typically pretends to loathe. It’s almost as if Trump isn’t as bad as he portrays. Imagine that,” was another user’s take.
Trump and Obama were accompanied by former GOP President George W. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush, former GOP Vice President Mike Pence, former second lady Karen Pence, former Democratic President Bill Clinton, former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Another social media user highlighted Vice President Kamala Harris’ visibly annoyed expression as she glanced back at Trump and Obama from the front row.
“Kamala’s face says it all – seeing Obama converse with Trump has her completely fuming,” the user noted.
While their exchange seemed light-hearted, a professional lip reader indicated that the duo eventually shifted to discuss more serious topics, as reported by the New York Post.
During their conversation, Trump allegedly told Obama they would need to “find a quiet place” to speak about a “matter of importance,” although the details remain vague.
At one point, Trump seemed to reference international agreements, reportedly saying: “I’ve pulled out of that. It’s the conditions. Can you imagine that?”
“I can’t talk, we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today,” Trump allegedly said, with Obama nodding in agreement.
Footage also reveals Trump and Melania arriving at the service and then greeting Pence, before moving on to an unresponsive Karen Pence, who did not appear to acknowledge them.
“Karen Pence should be embarrassed for her behavior. If she wasn’t going to act like an adult, she should have stayed home. People in Washington, D.C. have no idea how pathetic their games look to the rest of the country,” commented Brigitte Gabriel, founder of the advocacy group ACT for America.
“Watching Karen Pence at President Carter’s service snubbing the next president and his wife was appalling, classless, and non-Christian behavior,” another user added.
