Trump Anticipates Announcement of Indictments by Special Counsel
The special counsel’s office, led by Jack Smith, has announced that an indictment has been handed up to an unnamed person by a Washington, D.C., grand jury. Former President Donald Trump believes that he is the target of this indictment. Trump took to social media to express his belief that this indictment is another attempt by Smith to interfere with the 2024 presidential election. Trump also questioned why the indictment is being brought now, after a delay of 2.5 years, and accused the investigators of prosecutorial misconduct.
This indictment comes as Trump faces criminal charges in two other cases while campaigning for the presidency in 2024. He is currently the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination. The charges being considered in this indictment include deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and tampering with a witness. The investigation led by Smith centers around allegations that Trump and his allies sought to challenge Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Trump has previously claimed that he received a letter from Smith identifying him as a target of the Jan. 6 grand jury investigation. He has labeled the probe and other cases against him as politically motivated witch-hunts. Smith was appointed as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November, and he has already charged Trump with unlawfully retaining classified government documents and obstructing justice.
