Trump Appeals Ruling by DA Willis to Georgia Court

Former President Donald Trump has filed a notice of appeal with the Georgia Court of Appeals to overturn a lower court decision allowing Democrat Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to prosecute a 2020 election interference case against him.

The appeals court granted permission to Trump’s legal team to file the appeal of a March decision by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee. This decision allowed Willis to stay on the case as long as lead prosecutor Nathan Wade resigned due to a secret romantic relationship with Willis that the defendants alleged influenced the case.

Trump and other co-defendants have also filed notices of appeal in the case. The appeals process involves preparing the official record, filing briefs, and setting a date for oral arguments before the appeals court makes a decision before the 2025 term begins.

If the appeals court decides to remove Willis from the case, it is unlikely that Trump and the co-defendants will go on trial before the November election.

“President Trump looks forward to presenting arguments to the Georgia Court of Appeals for the case’s dismissal and the disqualification of Fulton County DA Willis due to misconduct in this politically motivated persecution,” said Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow.

In McAfee’s ruling, he found no sufficient evidence to prove that expenses were unfairly divided or that financial gain from Willis’ relationship with Wade influenced the case.
