Ryan Routh, the individual who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump last year, sought to acquire a rocket launcher from contacts in Ukraine ahead of his assassination attempt in September.

Federal authorities claim that Routh was trying to make a purchase from a person in Ukraine whom he believed could access military-grade weaponry.

According to court records, Routh instructed one of his associates to “Send me an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) or Stinger, and I will see what we can do… [Trump] is not good for Ukraine.”

He further inquired about logistical options for the purchase, asking his associate if it could be “shipped to me???”

“I need equipment so that Trump cannot get elected,” he added. “Going to a local store for such an item is impossible – however, you are at war, so those items are lost and destroyed daily – one missing would not be noticed.”

The identity of Routh’s Ukrainian contact remains unknown.

Prosecutors are using this evidence to substantiate claims that Routh had intentions to kill President Trump.

Routh was previously apprehended on September 15th after a Secret Service agent spotted the muzzle of his SKS semi-automatic rifle peeking through bushes at Trump’s International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Routh quickly abandoned his weapon and fled the area, leaving behind not only his firearm but also two backpacks and a GoPro camera, as stated in court documents.

He was captured about 40 minutes later on Interstate 95 in Martin County, Florida, where federal agents found various items in his vehicle, including a written escape plan, several burner phones, fake identification cards, and a document detailing ways to join the conflict in Ukraine, according to court filings.

Prosecutors assert that Routh had been plotting to assassinate the President for at least six months, exploring multiple channels to obtain weapons, including a contact in Mexico named “Ramiro,” from whom Routh sought to smuggle arms across the southern border.

Routh informed Ramiro that he intended to be in Mexico City after the attack on September 15th, as per authorities.

Routh’s trial is slated to commence on September 8th, 2025.
