Trump Attempts to Block Prosecutors’ Request for Gag Order in Legal Case.
Trump’s legal team has requested a federal judge to dismiss prosecutors’ plea for a gag order limiting the former president’s comments regarding law enforcement officers in the case where he is accused of mishandling sensitive documents.
In addition, they have asked U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Fort Pierce, Florida, to take action against “all government attorneys who were part of the decision to file the motion.”
The case involves 40 charges of unlawfully retaining classified national security documents after leaving office, one of four criminal cases against Trump. Trump asserts his right to hold onto these documents.
Prosecutors urged Cannon to review Trump’s bail terms and prevent him from making statements deemed harmful to law enforcement. Special counsel Jack Smith cited Trump’s recent false and incendiary statements about the FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago resort as the reason for the request.
Trump has falsely claimed that the FBI was authorized to carry out an assassination in fundraising messages for his election campaign against President Joe Biden.
In response to the request for a gag order, Trump’s lawyers accused prosecutors of improper behavior and rushed filing, violating court rules. They argued that such limitations on free speech rights during an election campaign are unfair.
The court has yet to indicate when a ruling on the motions will be made. Meanwhile, Trump’s trial in New York for falsifying business records and facing charges in Washington and Georgia over attempts to overturn the 2020 election results are ongoing.
