President Donald Trump criticized and condemned the Episcopal bishop for politicizing the long-standing tradition of the National Cathedral Prayer Service following her unsolicited political statements about “transgender children” and undocumented immigrants.

On Tuesday, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde addressed a sizable audience during the customary inauguration prayer service that included President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and their families.
Unexpectedly, the bishop called on Trump to “have mercy” on “gay, lesbian, and transgender children,” which led to bewildered expressions among the attendees, some of whom rolled their eyes and exchanged smirks at the politicized remarks.
“I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives,” she stated.
During Bishop Budde’s unsolicited remarks, Vice President Vance was seen chuckling slightly and glancing at his wife, seemingly in disbelief.
Shortly after, President Trump responded to the “disgraceful” speech in a post on Truth Social, calling for an apology.
“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people,” Trump wrote.
“Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”
Although the service featured speakers from Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions, notably, no conservative evangelical representatives were allotted a speaking opportunity during the inauguration service.
In addition to Trump, Congressman Mike Collins (R-Ga.) complained about Budde’s comments, suggesting that “the person giving this sermon should be added to the deportation list.”
Recently, Trump enacted an executive order to remove illegal aliens accused of violent crimes, following the previous administration’s lenient “catch and release” border policies that led to an influx of undocumented individuals crossing through the Southern border.
Trump also issued an order instructing federal agencies to recognize only two genders: male and female, while abolishing woke DEI initiatives to reestablish meritocracy as the sole criterion for federal employment decisions.
“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female,” Trump stated at his inaugural address on Monday.
