Trump Campaign Intensifies Vice Presidential Vetting Process
The campaign of former President Donald Trump has started reaching out to potential vice presidential candidates, sending vetting paperwork to a group of top contenders in recent weeks, as reported by two sources familiar with the process.
Among those approached are North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, according to one of the sources who requested anonymity to discuss the outreach.
Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, and former 2016 rival Ben Carson, who now serves in the cabinet, are also reportedly on the list.
The second source mentioned that various levels of paperwork have been exchanged with each candidate.
Representatives for the candidates did not respond immediately to requests for comment. It has been noted that Trump’s selection process is still ongoing and the final decision rests with him.
This news follows Trump’s recent legal troubles, having been found guilty of falsifying business records in his hush money trial. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
Trump has indicated that he is not in a rush to announce his running mate and may wait until the Republican National Convention in July to reveal his choice.
During an interview on Newsmax, Trump mentioned Scott, Burgum, Rubio, Vance, and Carson as potential candidates.
NBC first reported that vetting materials were sent to top contenders, while ABC provided the list of candidates.
