Trump Claims Special Counsel Is Trying to Suppress His Free Speech
Former President Donald Trump has accused special counsel Jack Smith of attempting to take away his First Amendment rights. Trump made these claims on Truth Social, the social media platform he recently launched. He also accused Smith’s team of leaking information to the mainstream media. U.S. prosecutors raised concerns about a threatening social media post from Trump, arguing that it suggests he may intimidate witnesses by disclosing confidential evidence. Trump responded by saying he cannot receive a fair trial in Washington, D.C., under the judge overseeing his case, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan. He believes Chutkan, a Barack Obama appointee and Democratic donor, is biased against him. Chutkan has previously delivered harsh sentences to protesters charged in relation to the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. Reuters contributed to this report.
