President Donald Trump praised Special Government Employee (SGE) Elon Musk for his essential contributions to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), underscoring the importance of his role as Musk gets ready to leave the agency on May 30th.

During an executive order signing in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the 47th president expressed admiration for Elon Musk’s steadfast patriotism and diligence—especially given that he offered his service without expecting any compensation.
“He’s incredible… a brilliant guy,” Trump remarked. “He provided tremendous assistance during the campaign and with his work at DOGE.”
President Trump also highlighted Musk’s achievements in the aerospace sector through SpaceX.
“When you see those rockets launch and successfully return to the same platform, no one else can achieve that except for this man. He’s just an extraordinary individual, and a very kind person as well,” he added.
Additionally, he commended Musk’s continuous technological advancements that benefit the U.S. and globally — aiding Americans during both man-made and natural disasters with Starlink, and enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities through Neurolink.
“He’s a great patriot… he creates exceptional products… it’s a fantastic vehicle. Everything he does is remarkable. Starlink is outstanding. His medical innovations are simply amazing.”
However, Musk’s involvement in the second Trump administration has sparked criticism — even as Trump had announced in August 2024 that Musk would join his team if he secured the 2024 election.
The first public hint of Trump’s intention to include Musk in his administration came on August 19th, 2024. In an interview with Reuters, Trump mentioned that he would extend either a Cabinet position or an advisory role to Musk, depending on Musk’s willingness to accept.
In a recent interview, Trump discussed what he characterized as the ongoing unjust treatment faced by Musk and Tesla, his multinational automotive and clean energy enterprise.
“They targeted Tesla unfairly, and I found that to be very unjust because he’s working hard to advance the country; he has already made significant contributions. He didn’t need to take on this role. He chose to,” he stated.
Trump concluded by expressing optimism that Musk will continue to play a role in his administration, even as he shifts back to focusing on his business endeavors.
“I told him… whenever you’re ready, I’d like to retain him for an extended period,” Trump remarked.
Musk is required to resign from his SGE position on May 30th due to the regulations governing any SGE role in a U.S. presidential administration.
“According to 18 U.S.C. § 202 (a), an SGE is ‘an officer or employee . . . who is appointed to perform temporary duties, with or without compensation, for a period not to exceed 130 days during any period of 365 consecutive days,’” as stated by the U.S. Federal Labor Relations Authority.
