Trump: Declining to Pursue Birth Control Restrictions
Former President Donald Trump has stated that he will never support restrictions on birth control.
“I have never and will never advocate for restrictions on birth control or other contraceptives,” Trump wrote on Tuesday on Truth Social. “This is a fabricated lie by the Democrats, misinformation, and disinformation because they have nothing else to run on except failure, poverty, and death. I do not endorse a ban on birth control, and neither does the Republican Party.”
Trump’s statement on Truth Social was in response to a question he received during an interview with a TV station in Pittsburgh, where he said “we’re looking at that” in regards to supporting any restrictions on access to contraception.
“I will be unveiling a policy on that very soon, and I believe it will be intriguing,” Trump stated. “I think it’s a wise decision. We will be releasing it shortly.”
According to a Trump spokesman cited by NBC News, Trump will be making an announcement regarding mifepristone in the near future, clarifying that “President Trump has never called for restrictions on contraceptives.”
President Joe Biden’s campaign highlighted Trump’s remarks by sharing the video on its social media platforms.
During his administration, Trump issued a regulation that expanded the types of employers who could opt-out of providing birth control coverage based on religious or moral objections, a regulation that was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2020.
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump mentioned that the monitoring of pregnancies would be left to the states so that the government would be informed if a woman had an abortion. He also stated that it would be up to the states to decide whether a woman should face repercussions for having an abortion.
In 2022, Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, effectively eliminating the federal constitutional right to an abortion.
