President Donald Trump issued a clear ultimatum to the nearly two million federal employees advocating for remote work: return to the office in person “or face termination.”

“We’re requiring them to report to work or be let go,” Trump stated on Wednesday.
“We anticipate that a significant portion of them will choose not to report, resulting in a leaner and more efficient government. This has been our goal for many decades, frankly,” Trump continued.
These statements come after a mass communication from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to federal workers, proposing buyout options for those unwilling to return to their offices.
“We prefer that they work in the office because, as everyone recognizes, many of them are not productive when working from home,” Trump noted. “This is also unfair to the millions of Americans who diligently work at physical job sites.”
“Federal employees are expected to adhere to high standards as they represent our government and our country.”
Eligible employees have until February 6th to accept the buyout offer.
Trump further indicated that federal workers may need to show proof that they are not holding other jobs during their “employment with the United States, as that would be illegal.”
“Numerous individuals receive paychecks while simultaneously working elsewhere, and they will need to demonstrate that they weren’t,” Trump asserted.
In response, Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), a longtime critic of Trump, voiced skepticism about the buyout plan, warning the public, “Don’t be deceived.”
“He’s fooled many with this offer. If you take it and resign, he will leave you high and dry just like he has done with contractors. He lacks the authority to implement this,” Kaine remarked.
The buyout initiative is part of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiatives led by Elon Musk, which aim to combat fraud, overspending, and waste within the federal government.
