Trump Issues Warning About Opposition Party’s Use of Extortion and Blackmail
President Joe Biden’s special counsel Jack Smith is seeking to convict former President Donald Trump for challenging the 2020 presidential election and retaining White House documents under the Presidential Records Act. Trump warned Saturday that this action threatens democracy by unwinding presidential immunity.
“If a president does not have immunity, the opposing party during his/her term in office can extort and blackmail the president by threatening to indict him for actions taken while in office, even if those actions were legal and appropriate,” Trump wrote Saturday on Truth Social. “This would undermine the presidency and the country as we know it, and is just one of the many dangers of not having presidential immunity.”
Trump expressed concern that all presidents would be subject to the same scrutiny that the Biden administration is putting towards him.
“Obama, Bush, and soon, Crooked Joe Biden, would all be in BIG TROUBLE,” Trump added. “If a president lacks immunity, he/she will be reduced to a ‘ceremonial’ president with limited power to act in the best interest of our country.
“This is not what the Founders intended! Protect presidential immunity. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump is seeking the court’s approval for presidential immunity from Smith’s indictments, arguing that his 2020 election challenge was within the scope of his duties as president. Smith and his lawyers oppose this and argue against presidential immunity, which Trump fears will weaken the presidency.
“Without presidential immunity, the presidency will lose its power and status, and may even become powerless under certain leaders,” Trump expressed in another Truth Social post. “The presidency will be overshadowed by the other branches of government, which goes against the intentions of our founders!”
