Trump Lawyers Hold Meeting with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Office

According to NBC News, Donald Trump’s attorneys have been informed that they should anticipate an indictment against the former US president as part of a federal investigation into his efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. The report does not specify when the indictment is expected to be issued. Special counsel Jack Smith is investigating Trump’s actions to reverse his loss to Democrat Joe Biden, including the pressure he exerted on officials with false claims of widespread voter fraud. Trump has already stated that he received a letter from Smith indicating that he is a target of the probe. Trump’s lawyers recently met with officials in Smith’s office at the Justice Department. This is not unusual as defense attorneys often meet with federal prosecutors before an indictment is filed. If indicted in the election case, it would mark the second round of federal charges brought by Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland. Trump is currently the first former US president to face criminal charges, with previous charges related to retaining classified government documents and obstructing justice. He is also the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
