Trump Leads in 6 Swing States as Economic Concerns Rise, Morning Consult Poll Shows

Former President Donald Trump has taken the lead ahead of President Joe Biden in six out of seven key battleground states, mainly due to concerns about the economy, as reported by Bloomberg.

Trump, the likely 2024 Republican presidential candidate, is ahead of Biden in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and North Carolina, based on the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll.

Among the seven swing states that are expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming presidential election in November, Biden only leads in Michigan, where he has a 2-point lead in the Morning Consult poll.

The poll reveals that Trump leads by 6 points in the popular vote in a head-to-head matchup with Biden across the seven battleground states. The margin remains similar even when considering third-party or independent candidates.

The latest results suggest that the polls have largely returned to pre-State of the Union levels, after Biden received a temporary boost in March with his best polling since October.

“Some of the positive impact from the State of the Union address has faded,” explained Morning Consult Senior Manager Matt Monday. “People are now associating Bidenomics and their view of the economy with the inflation rate.”

Bloomberg noted that over three-quarters of poll respondents attribute the current state of the U.S. economy to Biden, with almost half stating that he is “very responsible.”

Survey results indicate that a majority of swing-state voters anticipate worsening economic conditions in the near future. Less than 20% believe inflation and borrowing costs will decrease by the end of the year, while only 23% expect an improvement in employment rates.

For undecided voters, the expectation of improvement in these economic factors is in single digits.

During the weekend, Trump highlighted a Fox News battleground poll showing double-digit leads in Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and a 9-point lead in Wisconsin, when voters were asked about their trust in handling the economy.

In addition, the latest Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll revealed that for the first time, more than half of swing-state voters consider abortion to be very important in their voting decision. The percentage of Democrats and independents who share this view has increased since March.

The Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll was conducted from April 8-15 among 4,969 registered voters in seven swing states, with a margin of error of 1 percentage point across the seven swing states.
