Trump Maintains Firm Lead Over Haley in Michigan Primary

Donald Trump emerged victorious in the Michigan Republican presidential primary on Tuesday, solidifying his lead over the only remaining contender, Nikki Haley.

The victory was confirmed at 9:01 p.m. by Decision Desk HQ, shortly after the final polls closed. With 28% of the votes counted, Trump had 66.9% support compared to Haley’s 28.1%.

Trump has now secured significant wins in all Republican presidential nominating contests leading up to Super Tuesday on March 5, where 36% of Republican delegates will be allocated. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden easily won the Democratic primary.

Prior to the primary, Trump held a substantial lead in the FiveThirtyEight polling average, with a 56.9 percentage point lead over Haley in Michigan and a 59.9 point lead nationally.

Despite expectations of a strong showing from Trump, Haley’s campaign set low expectations for success, aiming for just 10% of the vote to signal a desire for an alternative to Trump within the GOP.

Michigan Republicans adopted a unique system to comply with RNC rules, awarding 16 delegates on Tuesday with the remaining 39 to be awarded during a caucus at the state GOP convention on Saturday.

Michigan is considered a crucial battleground state in Trump’s bid for reelection. He won the state in 2016, but lost it to Biden in 2020.
