Unlike other cabinet roles or the FBI director position, the appointment of the Secret Service head does not require Senate confirmation.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described Curran as “a Great Patriot, who has safeguarded my family over the last few years, and that is why I have faith in him to lead the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service.”
Curran is reported to have shielded Trump during the first assassination attempt on July 13th in Butler, Pennsylvania, after serving as the head of his security detail for four years. He also oversaw 85 personnel as the former president’s personal protector.
“He demonstrated his fearless bravery when he put his own life on the line to help save mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump remarked on Wednesday.
Having joined the agency in September 2001, Curran was promoted to deputy special agent in command of the Presidential Protective Detail on December 29th. This team is charged with protecting the current president and the first family, staffed by hundreds of agents.
Curran will succeed Ronald L. Rowe, who has been serving as acting director since former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in July due to severe criticism regarding the agency’s failure to prevent a would-be assassin from targeting Trump during the Butler campaign rally. Cheatle was also criticized for the agency’s inability to prevent the tragic shooting of rally attendee Cory Comperatore, 50, and for the injuries sustained by two other rally-goers who were hospitalized following the incident.
