Trump Suggests Greater Involvement of Military in Domestic Affairs
Campaigning in Iowa this year, Donald Trump stated that during his presidency he was not able to use the military to stop violence in primarily Democrat cities and states. Referring to New York City and Chicago as “crime dens,” the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination told his audience that next time, he would not wait to take action. Trump did not specify how exactly he would use the military during a possible second term, but he and his advisers have indicated that they would have broad authority to call up units. While the deployment of the military within the country’s borders would be a departure from tradition, the Insurrection Act would give Trump as commander in chief almost unfettered power to do so.
Despite the potential pushback from the Pentagon and others, Trump has openly discussed his plans to use the military at the border, in cities struggling with violent crime, and against foreign drug cartels. The threats have raised questions about military oaths, presidential power, and who Trump could appoint to support his approach.
Presidents have issued a total of 40 proclamations invoking the Insurrection Act. Repeated attempts to invoke the act in a new Trump presidency could put pressure on military leaders, who could face consequences for their actions even if done at the direction of the president. The matter has raised concerns among legal and national security experts. Overall, Trump’s agenda has sparked controversy and uncertainty regarding the potential use of the military domestically.
