“We’re doing pretty well, I think, with Russia,” he told reporters onboard Air Force One on Sunday evening. “Let’s see if we have something to announce, maybe Tuesday.”
Trump also mentioned, “A lot of work has been accomplished over the weekend.”
“We want to see if we can bring that war to an end.”
Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed the scheduled call between the leaders for Tuesday, although he refrained from sharing specifics to avoid “getting ahead of events,” as reported by The Associated Press.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the call comes a week after U.S. and Ukraine delegates convened in Saudi Arabia, where they proposed a 30-day ceasefire. While Putin agreed to the idea of a ceasefire in principle, he did not commit to a definitive deal and indicated that further discussions were necessary.
“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” Putin said during a press briefing in Moscow last week. “However, there are matters we need to discuss, and I believe we need to engage with our American colleagues and partners.”
Additionally, President Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin last week.
“We made significant progress in that meeting,” Witkoff stated on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday. “We addressed numerous specifics, and I can point to the substantial gap that existed between Ukraine and Russia prior to the inauguration, as opposed to where we are today. We have narrowed the issues between both parties and made considerable progress, in my view.”
Witkoff also expressed optimism regarding the upcoming call between President Trump and Putin, stating it would likely be fruitful.
“I believe this will be a very positive and constructive conversation between the two men, between the two presidents,” Witkoff conveyed to Brennan.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Trump at the White House last month, which resulted in Zelensky departing without any agreement after Trump mentioned that there was nothing left to negotiate.
Since then, Zelensky has sought to mend relationships, with the U.S. and Ukraine tentatively agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire plan.
While Russia has not yet confirmed their acceptance of the deal, Witkoff characterized his discussions as “positive.”
