Trump to Revoke Legal Protections for 240K Ukrainians, Leading to Increased Deportations – One America News Network

The Trump administration is set to revoke temporary legal status for nearly 240,000 Ukrainians who sought refuge in the United States due to the ongoing war in their country, as confirmed by a senior official and several sources involved.

This expected change, likely to take effect as early as April, would reverse the welcoming stance towards Ukrainians established during the Biden administration, which could lead to expedited deportation processes.
The initiative to withdraw protections for Ukrainian migrants was already in motion prior to a public dispute between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week in the Oval Office.
Sources indicate that this is part of a larger strategy by the Trump administration to eliminate legal status for over 1.8 million migrants who were permitted to enter the U.S. under temporary humanitarian parole programs instituted by the Biden administration.
An executive order from Trump, issued on January 20th, directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to “terminate all categorical parole programs.”
Furthermore, the administration is preparing to revoke parole for roughly 530,000 individuals from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela in the coming weeks. This information was first reported by CBS News.
Individuals who lose their parole status may face fast-tracked deportation proceedings.
This administration action follows the White House’s suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine and the cessation of all U.S. military assistance to the conflict-affected nation, as the U.S. attempts to compel Ukraine to engage in negotiations.
The relationship appeared increasingly strained last Friday after Trump and Zelensky had a heated discussion regarding the war’s status in the Oval Office.
Nonetheless, Zelensky expressed his willingness to collaborate with Trump’s “strong leadership” on Tuesday night, aiming to “make amends” following their “regrettable” conversation.
On Wednesday, the U.S. ramped up pressure on Zelensky for cooperation in facilitating peace talks with Russia by suspending its intelligence-sharing agreement with Ukraine.
“We have stepped back and are currently reviewing all dimensions of this relationship,” national security adviser Mike Waltz stated on Wednesday.
In his address to Congress on Tuesday night, Trump highlighted that he had engaged in “serious discussions with Russia” and indicated that he had “received strong signals that they are ready for peace.”
He further elaborated: “I received an important letter from President Zelensky of Ukraine.”
Trump disclosed that Zelensky’s correspondence stated: ‘Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody desires peace more than the Ukrainians. Regarding the agreements on minerals and security, Ukraine is prepared to sign it at your convenience.’
Trump remarked: “I appreciate him sending this letter; I just received it recently.”
Additionally, Trump criticized Europe’s engagement in the conflict, stating, “Europe has unfortunately invested more in purchasing Russian oil and gas than it has on defending Ukraine by a significant margin.”
During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised to abolish all Biden administration immigration initiatives, asserting that they exceeded the limits of U.S. law.
