Trump: Vice Presidential Selection Will Be a Candidate Who Would Make an Excellent President
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, in an exclusive interview with Newsmax, emphasized the importance of selecting a vice-presidential running mate who would make a great president if needed.
Trump stated that historical evidence shows that vice presidents do not typically sway elections significantly, so the priority is to choose someone with the qualities of a great president.
The VP pick will not be disclosed until the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, following Trump’s sentencing on July 11 by Judge Juan Merchan in Manhattan.
While considering executive and political experience, Trump stressed the importance of presidential qualities in the selection process.
Trump refrained from confirming Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., as the leading candidate, stating that there are several strong contenders being evaluated, with the announcement likely to be made during the convention.
He underscored the need for a vice president who could seamlessly step in as president if necessary, rather than focusing on their ability to sway the election.
