Trump’s Attempt to Pause $454M Verdict Fails as Some Sanctions are Halted

Former President Donald Trump recently faced a setback in his legal battle after losing a bid to pause a $454.2 million judgment against him in New York state’s civil fraud case. This means he will soon have to post assets with the court to prevent the seizure of his property.

The decision was made by Associate Justice Anil Singh of the New York Appellate Division, though it still needs to be approved by a full panel of the court. Singh did, however, grant Trump’s request for a stay on the ban preventing him from running any New York corporation or applying for loans from the state’s banks for three years.

Trump’s legal team has yet to comment on Singh’s decision.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump’s attorneys had requested a stay, citing his inability to post a bond for the full amount of the judgment while the appeal is ongoing. They proposed securing a $100 million bond with a bonding company held responsible for any payout in case Trump loses the appeal and is unable to pay.

Trump is currently appealing a ruling from Judge Arthur Engoron of the state court in Manhattan on February 16, which also includes a three-year prohibition on holding a top position at any New York company or seeking loans from state-registered banks.

Trump remains a top contender for the Republican nomination in the upcoming November election against President Joe Biden.
