Reports indicate that Janette Nesheiwat, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as Surgeon General, experienced a tragic gun accident at the age of 13 that resulted in her father’s death.

As reported by The New York Times, Nesheiwat was looking for scissors in a tacklebox on a shelf above her father’s bed when she inadvertently overturned it. A .380 caliber handgun fell from the container and discharged, hitting her father while he was sleeping.
“I saw blood on my father’s ear,” a young Nesheiwat recounted to the police at the time, according to The Times.
The police report noted that her father, Ziad “Ben” Nesheiwat, succumbed to his injuries the following day at an Orlando hospital, and his death was classified as an accidental shooting.
In her memoir titled “Beyond the Stethoscope,” published in 2017, Nesheiwat shared her experience of her father’s passing and how it motivated her to pursue a career in medicine. However, she did not disclose her role in the incident.
“At 13, I helplessly witnessed my beloved father dying from an accident, with blood everywhere. I could not save him. This marked the commencement of my journey to become a physician,” Dr. Nesheiwat opened her memoir.
“The trauma of that moment has haunted me like an unyielding shadow, unraveling the fabric of my young life and leaving me in a constant state of sorrow,” she elaborated.
According to The New York Times, the doctor has never publicly characterized her father’s death as an accidental shooting or addressed her involvement in the incident.
Dr. Nesheiwat has built a career centered on hands-on medicine, beginning with her work following natural disasters and later serving as medical director for CityMD, a network of urgent care clinics in New York and New Jersey. Additionally, she is a contributor to Fox News.
“Her expertise and leadership have been crucial during some of the most challenging healthcare crises we have faced,” Trump remarked during her nomination last month.
The president-elect emphasized that Nesheiwat worked on the front lines in New York City amidst the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Dr. Nesheiwat will be instrumental in MAKING AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN!,” the president-elect stated emphatically.
The doctor’s sister, Julie Nesheiwat, served as Trump’s homeland security advisor during his first term.
