The U.S. Central Command has confirmed that an airstrike was executed on Thursday, resulting in the death of ISIS leader Abu Yusif in the Deir Ezzor province of eastern Syria.

According to U.S. officials, another ISIS operative was also killed in the same operation.
“As previously mentioned, the United States — in collaboration with regional allies and partners — will not permit ISIS to exploit the ongoing situation in Syria and reestablish itself. ISIS aims to break free the over 8,000 operatives currently detained in facilities across Syria. We will actively target these leaders and operatives, including those planning to undertake operations beyond Syria,” stated CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla.
“ISIS seeks to liberate the over 8,000 ISIS operatives currently held in detention in Syria,” he emphasized. “We will resolutely focus on these leaders and operatives, particularly those endeavoring to orchestrate operations external to Syria.”
The announcement of Yusif’s death arrives just days after the U.S. successfully targeted 12 other ISIS terrorists in Syria through precision strikes. CENTCOM asserted that these operations are crucial for “disrupting, degrading, and defeating ISIS, preventing the terrorist organization from executing external operations, and ensuring that ISIS cannot seek to reconstitute in central Syria.”
This month marked the overthrow of Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad, who had held power for 24 years, by Syrian rebel forces.
Furthermore, this latest strike was announced just a day after the U.S. confirmed it had doubled its troop presence in Syria this year as part of its ongoing battle against ISIS.
