U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has reportedly halted a federal lawsuit that contested a Georgia election law enacted during President Joe Biden’s administration.

The Attorney General, heading the Department of Justice (DOJ), possesses the power to terminate lawsuits, including settling or closing civil cases, although this power is bound by specific procedures and limitations.
The law, signed by Governor Brian Kemp in 2021, prohibits providing food or water to voters waiting in line to vote. Among its restrictions, the bill enhances voter ID requirements, limits the use of ballot drop boxes, and generally bans counties from using mobile voting units.
The Biden administration subsequently initiated a lawsuit aimed at blocking the law, claiming it was designed to “deny Black voters equal access to the ballot.”
However, on Monday, Bondi dismissed the lawsuit, arguing that the Biden administration had propagated “an untrue narrative” regarding the law.
“Despite the Biden Administration’s inaccurate assertions of voter suppression, Black voter turnout actually saw an increase under (the law),” she stated. “Georgians are entitled to secure elections, not misleading narratives of false voter suppression intended to create division.”
The law was viewed as part of a larger effort by the GOP to tighten voting regulations across the country after the 2020 election, in which Biden secured 20 million more votes than Vice President Kamala Harris did in the recent 2024 election.
