On January 21st, the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) received a notification about 27-year-old James A. Faber. Authorities in Carlisle, Massachusetts, alerted D.C. officials that an individual, who had expressed suicidal thoughts online and was in possession of a firearm, was heading to the city.
Upon reaching the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) checkpoint, Faber triggered an alert during magnetometer screening, prompting an officer to perform a secondary hand search. Unfortunately, the officer failed to identify the concealed weapon, allowing Faber to enter the Capitol premises.
Subsequently, USCP reported that officers began a search for him. They located him at a nearby hotel early Tuesday morning and conducted an interview. After this, they searched his vehicle, leading to his arrest shortly thereafter.
Additionally, officials discovered the concealed 9mm handgun in his waistband.
The officer involved in the search has been suspended while an investigation is underway regarding the incident.
“Currently, there is no evidence suggesting that the individual intended to harm Congress. Fortunately, no injuries occurred,” stated authorities. “The USCP upholds the highest screening standards for visitors, prompting a comprehensive review of this incident and mandatory refresher training on security procedures to prevent a recurrence.”
Faber is charged with “Unlawful Activities, Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Resisting Arrest.”
