On Tuesday, the Senate voted to confirm Bondi with a tally of 54-46.
Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.), the sole Democratic official who has publicly stated that the legal issues facing Trump were politically driven, joined all Republican senators in supporting Bondi’s confirmation.
Bondi is set to lead as the top law enforcement official in the country, while Trump has vowed to undo what he claims is the Biden administration’s misuse of the Justice Department against his political rivals.
During her previous Congressional confirmation hearing last week, Bondi emphasized that partisan politics would not influence her responsibilities, asserting that individuals who have not committed crimes have no need to fear.
She also committed to not politicizing the department, stating that “justice will be applied equally across the nation.”
“If confirmed, I will endeavor to restore trust and integrity to the Department of Justice and its divisions,” Bondi pledged. “Under my leadership, partisan actions and weaponization will be eradicated. America will experience uniform justice for all.”
Bondi’s nomination was initially endorsed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in a narrow 12-10 vote along party lines before advancing to the full Senate.
As attorney general, Bondi will oversee a significant department that encompasses various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
Moreover, Bondi will possess the power to review federal investigations involving Trump, which were managed by the former special counsel Jack Smith. Smith resigned from his position before Trump returned to office, and the two cases against Trump were dismissed based on a longstanding Justice Department guideline that prohibits prosecuting a sitting president.
Bondi has previously suggested that Justice Department attorneys involved in Trump’s cases should themselves face investigations, while also affirming the existence of a “deep state” of career officials striving to undermine him.
“The Department of Justice, as well as the prosecutors, will be held accountable — the unethical ones will face prosecution. The investigators will be scrutinized because the deep state during President Trump’s previous term operated in secrecy. Now, they are under scrutiny,” she remarked on Fox News following Trump’s charges in 2023.
Bondi has a history of serving two terms as Florida’s attorney general.
