On Tuesday, officials from Ukraine and the United States convened in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to explore the possibility of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
The ceasefire will be enacted right away — contingent on Russia’s agreement to the plan.
Alongside coordinating a ceasefire request for Russia, the two delegations discussed “a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine’s vital mineral resources,” as per reports.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz represented the U.S., while Ukraine was represented by Andri Yermak, Chief of Staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Several Ukrainian foreign and defense ministers were also present.
“Ukraine has indicated its willingness to accept the U.S. proposal for an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which could be extended by mutual agreement between the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and simultaneous implementation by the Russian Federation,” stated a joint declaration following the discussions.
“The United States will make it clear to Russia that reciprocal actions are crucial for attaining peace,” it further stated.
“The United States will promptly resume intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine.”
The State Department has announced the commencement of immediate negotiations regarding a peace agreement with Russia, pending a response from the Kremlin.
