On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that more than 130 U.S. State Department offices worldwide are either being revamped or closed down, as he believes many are redundant or misaligned with America’s national goals.

“In the last 15 years, the Department’s expansion has been unparalleled and costs have skyrocketed,” Rubio stated. “Taxpayers have not seen a return on investment but rather decreased effectiveness in diplomacy. The expanding bureaucracy has become more influenced by radical political ideologies than by the promotion of America’s fundamental interests.”
A senior official from the State Department also disclosed that approximately 700 jobs at the main headquarters in Washington, D.C., are projected to be cut, as reported by CNN.
“This strategy will strengthen the Department from the bottom up, from individual bureaus to embassies,” Rubio added. “Functions specific to regions will be consolidated for better efficiency, unnecessary offices will be eliminated, and non-statutory initiatives that do not align with America’s essential interests will be discontinued.”
Rubio highlighted the recent closure of the Global Engagement Center (GEC), which was officially shut down last week, as an illustrative case.
He further asserted that the GEC was involved in censoring viewpoints it deemed unfavorable on social media platforms and in the media, unfairly targeting conservative positions.
The GEC had an annual budget of about $61 million and employed 120 staff members.
Rubio elaborated that most of the offices being shut down are primarily focused on “human rights” and “democracy” promotion at taxpayers’ expense, “even when they directly conflicted with the goals of the Secretary, the President, and the American populace.”
Moreover, he claimed that the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration had allocated millions in taxpayer money to international entities and NGOs that actively supported large-scale migration worldwide, including at the U.S. southern border.
“The American people deserve a State Department that is prepared and dedicated to promoting their safety, security, and prosperity globally, one that respects their tax dollars and the honorable duty of government service,” Rubio concluded. “Beginning this week, they will have that.”
