Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has issued a pointed response to House Republicans’ request for documents and testimony, rejecting it an an “unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty” and unduly going to “interfere with law enforcement investigations.”

Bragg’s grand jury will now not meet Thursday to hear the case on former President Donald Trump, pushing the next step back to next Monday at the earliest, according to reports.

Another witness might be coming in to testify Monday, sources added. The 23 men and women who are hearing the prosecution’s case on whether to indict the former president.

“For security reasons, if I were the Manhattan DA’s office, I would be coordinating with law enforcement, with the secret service actually, what day is Trump planning to surrender? On that day that they choose, coordinate with law enforcement how they can keep him safe, and then I would wait until the very last possible minute to seek an indictment before that date,”  former Manhattan prosecutor Karen Friedman Agnifilo told ABC News.

If indicted, Trump would be the first U.S. president to face criminal charges in a court.

The grand jury, a panel of U.S. citizens residing in Manhattan, has been considering evidence in one of many legal probes swirling around Trump as he mounts a comeback bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

The office has been investigating $130,000 paid in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 election campaign to Daniels, a porn star who said she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006 when he was married to his current wife Melania.
