According to District Attorney Tasha Mosley, U.S. Marshals tracked down Kathan Guzman at his mother’s residence in central Florida after he eluded authorities for over two weeks.
In August 2022, Guzman was charged with felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, and necrophilia related to the strangulation death of his then-girlfriend, Delila Grayson, who was 19 at the time.
Prosecutors allege that Guzman strangled Grayson during the early hours of August 7th, 2022, following a lengthy argument. Guzman claims Grayson attacked him with a knife, and he used a “sleeper hold” for approximately 10 seconds without intending to kill her, as stated by the District Attorney’s office. However, the medical examiner testified that death could occur if pressure was maintained on the neck for over 10 seconds.
He was convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault in 2024 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Guzman was accidentally released on March 27th due to a clerical error.
Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen told Channel 2 News that the blunder resulted from inadequate training and a lack of attention from his staff.
“I am quite frustrated with this oversight by a sheriff’s office employee,” Mosley remarked. “My team invested significant effort to deliver justice for the victim’s family and to enhance public safety, and we are extremely disheartened by this situation.”
