As reported by ABC News, Collins will receive presidential-level security and will be taken to a secret location to view the address.
The designated survivor is a high-ranking cabinet member chosen to remain at a secure, undisclosed site during events where the president, vice president, and other key government officials are gathered together.
On the Democratic side, Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) has been selected as their designated survivor.
This practice is in place to guarantee that if a catastrophic event occurs, there is someone to lead should the nation’s leadership be incapacitated. The tradition began during the Cold War, driven by fears of nuclear threats.
