After his 2024 presidential campaign and serving as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has officially declared his candidacy for the 2026 gubernatorial race in Ohio.

“President Trump is rekindling our faith in America. We need a leader here at home who will restore our belief in Ohio, which is why I am proud to announce today that I am running to be the next Governor of a remarkable state at the center of the greatest nation on earth,” Ramaswamy remarked during a launch event in Cincinnati on Monday.
“I plan to transform Ohio into the foremost state in the nation that attracts patriots across America, and not just Florida and Texas. Ohio will be the hallmark of excellence in America,” he affirmed.
Throughout his previous campaign against Trump for the GOP nomination, Ramaswamy remained a staunch ally of the 47th president. He was subsequently appointed to collaborate with tech leader Elon Musk alongside DOGE.
However, he stepped down from that committee last month, alluding to “future plans in Ohio” that many speculated indicated a run for governor.
In a nod to a subject line from a Trump administration email regarding buyouts for federal employees, Ramaswamy began his Monday comments referencing his earlier support for Trump, calling the 2024 election “a pivotal moment.”
Recently, Robert Sprague, Ohio’s 49th Treasurer of State since 2019, announced his endorsement of Ramaswamy, opting not to pursue the gubernatorial race as many expected.
Ohio’s 70th governor, Mike DeWine, selected former Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, a fellow Republican and potential candidate, to fill Vance’s Senate vacancy.
DeWine then appointed Jim Tressel, a former Ohio State University football coach, to serve as lieutenant governor. Tressel expressed a “singleness of purpose” for his new role during a press conference announcing his candidacy but did not exclude the possibility of a future run for governor.
Political analysts suggest Ramaswamy’s alignment with Trump will be a significant asset in Ohio, which Trump won by an 11-point margin last November.
Nevertheless, Ramaswamy has encountered backlash from some Republicans due to his past remarks, including his suggestion that the U.S. should welcome more “skilled” immigrants in the tech sector through the H-1B visa program.
“A culture that prioritizes the prom queen over the math Olympiad winner or the jock over the valedictorian won’t yield the best engineers,” Ramaswamy tweeted, implying a lack of skilled tech workers within the country.
The H-1B visa program enables U.S. employers to hire foreign professionals in specialized occupations.
“There is nothing inherently wrong with American workers or American culture,” responded former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley. “All you need to do is look at the border to see how many people seek what we have. We should invest in and prioritize Americans over foreign workers.”
Critics have also contended that it’s not necessarily that foreign workers are more skilled or intelligent; rather, H-1B visas facilitate businesses replacing American workers with lower-paid foreign labor, which undermines job opportunities for Americans in pursuit of greater profits.
