VP Harris Criticizes SCOTUS for Roe Overturn, Raises Concerns About Future Judgments
Vice President Kamala Harris is criticizing the conservative-majority Supreme Court, expressing concern that future rulings may restrict civil rights and personal freedoms.
In an interview with The New York Times, Harris raised issues about the high court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022 and voiced apprehensions about the court’s inclinations.
“This court has demonstrated itself to be an activist court,” she stated to the Times. “I am concerned about fundamental freedoms across the board.”
However, she refrained from elaborating further, stating, “I don’t want, at this time, to use my voice in a way that causes alarm. But this court has clearly indicated that they are willing to reverse established rights.”
Harris highlighted Justice Clarence Thomas’ statements in the case overturning Roe — including his opinion urging the court to “reconsider” decisions guaranteeing rights to same-sex intercourse, as well as those relating to marriage and contraception.
“You can even see Clarence Thomas revealing a lot of the unspoken thoughts,” Harris remarked. “Just consider what he has said and then perhaps that offers us some insight. Just examine one of the justices to see where they may go next.”
Regarding the presidential race, Harris asserted that former President Donald Trump lacks trust in women to make their own choices, but she declined to comment on whether he respects women in any capacity.
“I cannot say what is on his mind,” she remarked to the Times.
“I will say that when you observe Trump’s abortion bans across the country, those bans imply a lack of trust in women to know what is in their best interest.”
Harris forewarned a gloomy future for abortion rights under a new Trump administration; the former president has stated that the issue should be left to the states to decide.
“I believe the American people can recognize when they are being deceived and have the ability to see beyond the facade,” Harris conveyed to the outlet.
