U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has announced his upcoming trip to Greenland this Friday, accompanied by his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, amidst President Donald Trump’s consideration of annexing the territory.

Vance explained that the purpose of his visit is to evaluate the security situation in Greenland.
Previously reported on March 24th, the Second Lady is slated to spend several days in Greenland independently, traveling to Nuuk, the capital, and participating in various cultural events.
“There was so much enthusiasm surrounding Usha’s trip to Greenland this Friday that I felt I shouldn’t let her have all the enjoyment alone, so I decided to accompany her,” Vance expressed in a video shared on X on Tuesday.
Despite this, Vance’s impending visit has been criticized by upset officials in Greenland and Denmark, who view it as a provocation connected to President Trump’s ambitions regarding the region.
Greenland operates as a semi-autonomous territory under Danish governance, particularly concerning its foreign relations and defense. Nonetheless, calls for independence have gained traction among its populace.
In response to the announcement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the Second Lady’s trip as “unacceptable pressure” and declared intentions of resistance. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leading candidate for Greenland’s next Prime Minister, remarked that the visit demonstrated a “disrespect for the Greenlandic people.”
The Vice Presidential couple’s itinerary will reportedly focus on visiting the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, home to the U.S. Space Force’s 821 Space Base Group.
“We aim to enhance the security of Greenland’s inhabitants, as it is crucial for safeguarding global security,” Vance elaborated. “Numerous countries have posed threats to Greenland, aiming to utilize its territory and waterways to threaten the United States, Canada, and the Greenlandic populace. Thus, we’re assessing the situation there.”
“The strategic alliance between the United States and Greenland has always been essential to our national and economic security. During World War II, the U.S. established numerous military bases in Greenland to defend the North Atlantic against Nazi threats. In the Cold War, additional resources were allocated to Greenland to counter Soviet missile threats,” a statement from the Vice President’s office published on Tuesday noted.
“In recent years, negligence and inaction by Danish leaders and earlier U.S. administrations have allowed adversaries to push their agendas in Greenland and the Arctic,” the statement continued.
Despite the controversy, the revised agenda for Vance to visit the U.S. base is viewed as less contentious. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen declared the visit “very positive,” affirming that Denmark holds “no objections” toward Vance’s visit to the base.
Rasmussen further remarked that it was a “masterful spin in many ways to present [the U.S.] as escalating when they are actually de-escalating.”
President Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland since as early as 2019, given its strategic importance to the United States due to its geographical position.
“I believe Greenland is a matter we will eventually resolve. I think the people wish to align with us,” Trump stated in January.
“I am uncertain about the validity of Denmark’s claim to it. However, it would be a very unfriendly act on their part if they did not allow this to happen, as it concerns the protection of the free world, not just us,” Trump continued.
During a cabinet meeting on Monday, President Trump refuted assertions that the visit was confrontational.
“This is about friendship, not provocation. We are engaging with many people from Greenland who wish for their security and well-being to be ensured. They are reaching out to us; we are not reaching out to them,” Trump remarked on Monday.
