In a significant shift within foreign policy, President Donald Trump has declared that his national security advisor, Mike Waltz, will be transitioning to a new position as the United States ambassador to the United Nations (UN).

On Thursday, the 47th president shared via social media that Waltz was being nominated for the role of UN ambassador.

Trump previously withdrew the UN ambassador nomination for New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, citing the importance of retaining her position in the House of Representatives to safeguard the Republicans’ “razor-thin” majority.

“I have asked Elise, as one of my biggest allies, to stay in Congress to help deliver historic tax cuts, great jobs, record economic growth, a secure border, energy dominance, peace through strength, and more, so we can MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” Trump noted on Truth Social. “With a very tight majority, I don’t want to risk anyone else contending for Elise’s seat. The people love Elise, and with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day. There are others capable of performing well at the United Nations,” he stated.

President Trump made the announcement regarding Waltz on Truth Social.

“I am excited to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz as the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump expressed in his post. “Throughout his time in uniform, in Congress, and as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has prioritized our Nation’s Interests. I am confident he will do the same in this new role.”

While President Trump seeks an ideal candidate to permanently fill the high-ranking position, he also announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as the interim National Security Advisor, in addition to his current secretary of state duties.

Since the withdrawal of Elise Stefanik’s nomination, the role of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has remained unfilled during Trump’s second presidential term.
