Tim Walz, the Minnesota Governor who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, recently gave his first interview post-election loss alongside Kamala Harris, expressing that he was “a bit surprised” about the election results, which did not favor them.

“It seemed like at rallies, and in the shops I visited, the momentum was leaning our way,” Walz (D-Minn.) shared during an interview with Tom Hauser of KSTP-TV in Minnesota on Thursday. “Clearly, that wasn’t the case in the end.”

“So indeed, I was somewhat surprised. I felt we had a strong message, and I believed the country was ready to embrace it,” Walz continued.

Walz also reflected on whether he was the right choice to accompany Vice President Kamala Harris on the 2024 Democratic ticket, especially in comparison to “more popular” alternatives like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D-Penn.).

“The decision wasn’t mine; it was the vice president’s. As I’ve stated throughout this campaign, if I were asked, ‘Could you have done things differently?’ in light of our loss, I would say yes. But on this matter, I did my best,” Walz remarked.

“History will make that determination,” he added when discussing the potential impact of his candidacy on the Democrats’ chances of winning.

Walz’s surprise at the election results comes after he and Vice President Kamala Harris failed to secure any swing states, also performing worse than President Biden in nearly every U.S. county in 2020.

“We intended to be inclusive and draw people in. Donald Trump has expressed a contrary vision, so if that’s where America leans, I need to understand more about what Americans want, because I thought they might favor a more uplifting message,” Walz concluded.

“We need to comprehend the type of leadership they desire,” he reflected. “Economic issues likely influenced their choices.”

The former Democratic vice presidential nominee mentioned that he is currently unsure about running for re-election as governor in Minnesota after his second term, leaving the possibility open for a return to the national scene.

“It’s a bit premature to say,” Walz stated. “What I’ve always remarked is that this depends more upon the public’s sentiment. If there’s a call for us to run again, we’d consider it, but for now, I’m focused on the current legislative session.”
