Legislators in Washington state have put forth a new proposal aimed at removing George Washington, the first president of the United States, from the state flag.

Democratic lawmakers are reportedly striving to advance the proposal with the intention of “creating a new state flag” that “more accurately represents the diversity and principles of all Washingtonians.”

The bill, identified as House Bill 1938, seeks to establish a committee responsible for designing a fresh flag for the “Evergreen State.”

Proponents argue that the existing Washington flag is “frequently criticized for its poor design and lack of relevance to the state’s identity.”

“The flag displays an intricate portrait of George Washington, which makes it excessively complex and hard to reproduce, violating fundamental flag design principles that emphasize simplicity. Furthermore, despite being a pivotal national figure, Washington has limited historical ties to the state itself, rendering his image less significant as a symbol for Washington,” the proposal outlines.

The Democratic representatives asserted that the flag is also visually unappealing as it “incorporates too many colors” and its design is “outdated and uninspired.”

If the proposed legislation is successful, the newly formed committee would create a flag that captures Washington’s “shared heritage, resources, and diverse cultural communities,” as they argued.

The committee would comprise representatives from the Washington State Arts Commission, members of the state House and Senate, the Secretary of State, historians, designers, cultural figures, tribal delegates, and citizen representatives from various areas of the state—all appointed by the governor.

Subsequently, the committee would gather public feedback through schools, community organizations, tribes, public meetings, virtual discussions, and online surveys before finalizing the new design by July 1st, 2028.

Moreover, the new design must receive voter approval in the upcoming general election to be adopted as the official “updated” state flag.

A public hearing in Olympia, Washington, is scheduled before the House Committee on State Government & Tribal Relations for February 18th.
