Prior to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s reception at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed his concerns regarding the trade deficit with Canada on his Truth Social platform, asserting that Canada ought not to presume they hold an advantageous position in negotiations.

Carney took office on March 14, 2025, having replaced former PM Justin Trudeau.

“I am eager to collaborate with him, but I struggle to grasp one fundamental TRUTH – Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 billion annually, in addition to offering them FREE military protection and several other benefits?” Trump queried on his social media early Tuesday.

“We don’t require their cars, their energy, their lumber, or anything they possess, save for their friendship, which I hope will persist indefinitely. Conversely, they rely on us for everything! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly; that will likely be my only significant question,” explained President Trump.

During their discussion, President Trump emphasized the advantages that Canadians would enjoy should they agree to become the 51st state.

“It takes two to tango, right?” Trump remarked. “I believe it would result in significant tax reductions for Canadian citizens. They would receive free military services, exceptional healthcare, and other benefits. There would be numerous advantages.”

Many Canadians voice concerns regarding their healthcare system, citing ongoing systemic issues that affect quality and accessibility, despite it providing core benefits like universal access. Common complaints include lengthy wait times for specialist appointments, surgeries, and diagnostic tests like MRIs and CT scans. Furthermore, there is a nationwide shortage of healthcare professionals, leading to delays and overburdened staff. Emergency rooms experience long waits, with some even closing temporarily due to insufficient resources. Additionally, while basic healthcare coverage exists, many services such as mental health therapy, dental care, and prescription medications are not universally included.

“I truly believe this could be greatly beneficial for Canada, but we won’t broach that subject unless someone wishes to discuss it,” Trump added.

Carney responded to Trump’s remarks by declaring: “As you know from real estate, there are some properties that are never on the market.”

“Through my discussions with the ‘owners’ of Canada during the campaign and recent months, it’s clear that this land is not for sale. It will never be for sale. The potential lies in the partnership and what we can create together.”

Carney further stated that President Trump has “revitalized” international security while emphasizing that Canada “is committed to a significant increase in our investment in Canadian security and our partnership.”

Furthermore, President Trump was asked by Carney whether he could take any steps to eliminate the newly imposed tariffs on Canada, to which Trump bluntly replied, “No.”

“That’s simply the way it is,” Trump reiterated, supporting Carney’s statement about how Canada is “not for sale.”
