West Virginia AG Morrisey Extends Warm Welcome to Relocating Trump Trial
West Virginia’s Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has expressed support for former President Donald Trump’s request to move his trial on charges related to the 2020 election out of Washington, D.C. Morrisey believes that Trump would not receive a fair trial in D.C., which he refers to as “the home of the Swamp.” He suggests that the trial should be relocated to West Virginia, where he claims that the rule of law is upheld and there is no double standard of justice. Trump had called for a change of venue and a “federal takeover” of the nation’s capital, arguing that he would not get a fair trial in D.C. due to bias against him. His attorney, John Lauro, also supports the idea of moving the trial to a more politically balanced location. While the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to trial in the state and district where the crime was committed, federal trials have been moved in the past due to prejudice concerns. However, judges in Washington have declined to move other cases related to the January 6 protests at the Capitol, despite defendant requests citing bias. West Virginia, a strongly Republican state, has not elected a Democrat for president since 1996.
