President Donald Trump has presented federal employees with the option to resign while receiving pay for up to eight months, as part of a sweeping initiative to reduce and reform the U.S. government.

The proposal, detailed in an email sent out on Tuesday, could fundamentally transform the federal workforce as Trump aims to eliminate COVID-19-era measures that allowed many employees to work remotely.

“This email is being sent to more than TWO MILLION federal employees,” remarked Katie Miller, a member of an advisory board for the Department of Government Efficiency, on X.

This initiative follows Trump’s halt on federal aid and the suspension of grant funding, which was subsequently determined by a federal judge on Tuesday evening.

White House officials anticipate that about 5% to 10% of federal workers will accept the offer, an action projected to save taxpayers approximately $100 billion annually, as noted by Axios

Per NBC News, the buyout would include around eight months’ worth of salary and benefits.

“The government-wide email being circulated today ensures all federal employees are aligned with the new administration’s objective to have them working in-office and meeting higher standards,” stated a high-ranking officials.

“It’s been five years since the onset of COVID, and only 6 [%] of federal employees are back working full-time in the office. That’s simply not acceptable.”

The offer is directed at all full-time federal employees, Postal Service workers, and individuals involved in immigration enforcement or national security.
