The live-action adaptation of Disney’s ‘Snow White’ has encountered significant backlash, setting the stage for one of the most disappointing opening weekends the studio has experienced in recent memory.

Estimates suggest the film will generate around $45 million this weekend, indicating a considerable challenge to recoup production and marketing costs that total $350 million. The film currently holds a dismal 44 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The New York Times described the film as “neither good enough to praise nor awful enough to delightfully criticize,” whereas The Guardian labelled it a “excruciatingly poor live-action reinterpretation.”

The film’s promotion got off to a rocky start when Disney opted to “reimagine” the seven dwarfs as “magical beings” of various sizes and genders, aiming to “avoid perpetuating stereotypes.”

This decision was influenced by dwarf actor Peter Dinklage, who criticized the film’s representation of dwarfism, leading Disney to later decide on CGI for the dwarfs instead.

“I was a bit surprised when they expressed pride in casting a Latina actress as Snow White while still adhering to the narrative of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’” Dinklage remarked in early 2022.

“You’re progressive in one aspect but are still telling an outdated story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. What’s going on here? Have I not done enough for progress?” he continued.

As critiques mounted, the film was branded “woke” and “overly politically correct,” marking just the initial phase of its downward trend.

Speculation arose regarding conflicts between Latina actress Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, and Jewish actress Gal Gadot, portraying the Evil Queen, as they expressed contrasting views on the Gaza conflict.

Before the trailer dropped in December, Zegler tweeted “Free Palestine,” while Gadot communicated her support for Israelis following the attacks by Hamas on October 7th, 2023.

Numerous Arab organizations urged a boycott of the film due to Gadot’s involvement and her public stance on the Israel-Palestine issue, stating that it should not be displayed in Arab countries.

“Gal Gadot represents not art, but occupation, violence, and a military force committing atrocities against Palestinians,” stated a coalition of organizations in Jordan, Bahrain, and those advocating for boycotting Israel supporters.

“Casting her in Snow White is an attempt to whitewash her image and divert attention from her unwavering support for Israeli actions,” the statement further asserted.

Adding to the turmoil, Zegler challenged President Trump and his supporters after the election, posting “may trump supporters and trump voters and trump himself never know peace” on Instagram before later apologizing.

Zegler also defended the film’s emphasis on political correctness, remarking in December, “People are joking that ours is the PC (politically correct) Snow White—yep, it is, because it needed that.”

“It’s an 85-year-old animated classic, and our take offers a fresh perspective on a young woman who has more purpose than just ‘Someday My Prince Will Come,’” she added.

Furthermore, dwarf actors recently protested against the film ahead of its release, criticizing Disney’s choice to use CGI instead of casting real dwarf actors.

“Disney has produced a live-action film but instead of providing opportunities for seven talented little people, they’ve completely excluded us and opted for CGI,” stated dwarf actress Ali Chapman.

The remake was penned by “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig and helmed by Marc Webb.
