Women in the GOP Contributing to Trump’s Dominance in Primaries
Former President Donald Trump is experiencing a significant lead in the Republican primary field, fueled by the support of women, according to a poll conducted by J.L. Partners for DailyMail.com. The poll showed that Trump holds a double-digit advantage over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis among women in key states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Arizona. Trump’s lead among women in the Republican primary is as much as 30 points higher than his lead among men. This trend is in contrast to Trump’s performance with women in the wider country, where he typically lags behind President Joe Biden, especially in the suburbs.
According to James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, women in the Republican primary audience are Trump’s most ardent supporters because they prioritize a candidate who will stand up against “woke values” rather than one who can beat President Biden. Meanwhile, Meghan Milloy, co-founder of Republican Women for Progress, suggested that DeSantis’ focus on culture wars may not resonate with women, who are generally tired of attacks on businesses for being too “woke.”
This shift is notable considering Trump’s previous struggles to win over women voters in the 2016 and 2020 elections, where he received a lower percentage of the female vote compared to the male vote, according to Pew Research. Despite this, Trump has recognized that women prioritize safety, border security, low taxes, and low interest rates.
