On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to propose a land swap with Russia as part of ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the nearly three-year-long conflict.

“We will exchange one territory for another,” Zelensky stated during an interview with the Guardian, published on Tuesday.
Zelensky mentioned that he plans to offer a portion of the Kursk region that Ukraine seized from Russia in August, while expressing uncertainty about the territories he would request in exchange: “All our territories are significant; there’s no priority.”
Throughout the discussion, Zelensky emphasized that “Security guarantees from America are essential for real security guarantees.”
“Some suggest that Europe could provide security guarantees without the U.S., and I consistently argue against that,” he added.
Zelensky highlighted the importance of U.S.-manufactured Patriot air defense systems, asserting they are crucial for defense in ways that European systems cannot match.
“Only the Patriot can protect us against various types of missiles. Other [European] systems exist, but they fail to offer comprehensive protection. This illustrates that without American support, security guarantees cannot be fully realized,” Zelensky stated.
Former President Donald Trump shared his indifferent views on Ukraine on Monday, declaring, “They (Ukraine) may reach an agreement, or they may not. They could become Russian at some point, or they might not.”
Trump further stated that any past or future support for Ukraine should be reciprocated with “rare earth” materials.
“We are investing substantial sums, and I want that back. I informed them I expect an equivalent of about $500 billion in rare earth materials,” Trump noted. “They have basically agreed to this, so at least we aren’t left feeling foolish.”
While Trump advocates for a swift resolution to the conflict and Zelensky seeks security assurances, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demand Ukraine’s withdrawal from territories it has taken throughout the war, along with guarantees that Ukraine will not pursue NATO membership.
As both parties prepare for negotiations, Zelensky is poised to attend the Munich Security Conference this week, where he is expected to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who openly remarked last year that he is indifferent to Ukraine’s fate.
Moreover, Trump mentioned on Tuesday that he is “dispatching Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent to Ukraine for discussions with President Zelensky. This War MUST and WILL END SOON — Too much Loss and Destruction. The U.S. has expended BILLIONS globally, with scant results. WHEN AMERICA IS STRONG, THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.”
