Zelenskyy Seeks Assistance from the West to Ensure Successful ’24 Election
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to calls from US senator Lindsey Graham to announce elections in 2024 by stating that elections could take place during wartime if certain conditions are met. Zelenskyy mentioned that the cost of holding elections in peacetime is 5 billion hryvnia ($135 million) and that he would require financial support from the US and Europe to hold elections during wartime. He also highlighted the need for election observers in the trenches and additional voting access for overseas citizens. Graham emphasized the importance of holding free and fair elections in Ukraine while it is under assault from Russia, stating that weapons support would continue to flow. Zelenskyy emphasized the need to include those fighting Russia’s invasion in the elections.
