Another potential disaster: Joe Biden’s conflict with Israel
Barack Obama’s well-known warning about Joe Biden has become almost a cliche.
“Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f–k things up,” the former president remarked about his vice president.
This statement, made as Biden neared the Democrats’ 2020 nomination, has provided a clear explanation for his tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
From the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan to the haphazard handling of the southern border crisis, Biden’s decisions have turned his tenure into a symbol of failure.
A common theme is that his blunders were avoidable mistakes.
In many cases, taking no action would have yielded better results than the actions he chose to take.
However, recent actions by the incumbent suggest that a reassessment may be necessary.
It appears that Obama himself underestimated Biden’s capacity to mess things up.
The evidence lies in the president’s latest and most egregious mistake, which has the potential to have disastrous global consequences.
This misstep could set the world ablaze.
By criticizing Israel incessantly and now threatening to halt munition supplies during a conflict, Biden is triggering a series of global consequences.
All of this because he is afraid of losing the election to Donald Trump.
There are three aspects to consider in evaluating Biden’s actions.
Who is harmed, who benefits, and what is the payoff for his campaign?
Catastrophic Timing
Israel, naturally, bears the brunt of the negative repercussions.
At a time when Israel is engaged in a life-or-death struggle with Hamas, Biden has chosen a terrible moment to weaken his promise of “ironclad” support for the Jewish state.
Following a passionate connection of the Hamas attack on October 7 to the horrors of Nazi Germany during a Holocaust Remembrance event, Biden’s sudden freeze on military aid appears inconsistent.
If the freeze interferes with Israel’s efforts to eliminate Hamas, it will inevitably lead to more terrorism and another war, resulting in further civilian casualties on both sides.
But Biden’s blunder goes beyond this. It also undermines America’s relationships with other allies, who now have reason to worry that they could be the next targets on his list.
Can Saudi Arabia trust an administration that has undermined America’s closest ally?
Should European allies be concerned that they may fall afoul of a White House that treats its enemies better than its friends?
Ukraine has more reason to worry, while Russia and China likely see American weakness in action with delight.
Meanwhile, Hamas benefits immediately from the aid freeze.
By pressuring Israel to care for Gaza civilians, Biden has rewarded Hamas for using its own people as shields.
No military can simultaneously protect its own soldiers, fight embedded terrorists, and care for the civilian population that the enemy hides amongst.
It is now clear that Biden’s unreasonable demands on Israel were intentional.
By placing impossible burdens on Israel and threatening to abandon it if it does not comply, Biden hopes to end Israel’s defensive war.
His months of criticism convinced Hamas their time was on their side, contributing to their refusal to negotiate the release of hostages for a cease-fire.
Now, by withholding munitions for Israel’s push into Rafah, Hamas is being rewarded once again by Biden.
Former Israeli ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, stated that Biden has “created an American diplomatic Iron Dome for Hamas.”
The freeze also benefits Iran significantly.
With newfound resources from lifted oil sanctions and ransom payments, Iran is emboldened to target Israel and drive America out of the Middle East.
Tehran Benefits
Hezbollah’s increased rocket attacks from Lebanon, sanctioned warnings of a “hot summer” along Israel’s northern border, and renewed attacks by the Houthis on international ships are all indications of an emboldened Iran.
Regrettably, Biden seems willing to accept the consequences of betraying Israel if it boosts his domestic support.
His distancing from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an attempt to gain support from Muslim-American voters and college students in the Upper Midwest swing states.
However, this strategy has not yielded the desired results. Even though these groups have influenced American policy, they have not rewarded Biden with their support.
The New York Times reported that Muslim activists found the announcement regarding Israel to be “too little, too late.”
“The president’s announcement is extremely overdue and horribly insufficient,” said Abbas Alawieh, an Arab American protest leader in Michigan.
“He needs to come out against this war. Period. That would be significant.”
It would indeed be significant, and devastating for Israel and America. Yet Biden continues on this path.
Fortunately, some Democrats are beginning to express concern about his approach to the conflict, accusing him of endangering Israel.
Twenty-six House Democrats, including Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey, warned the White House that the weapons freeze advances the Iranian terror proxies’ agenda and makes a hostage agreement harder to achieve.
Some key Democratic donors, like Hollywood mogul Haim Saban, have also expressed dissatisfaction, stating that there are more Jewish voters who care about Israel than Muslim voters who care about Hamas.
“Bad, Bad, Bad decision on all levels,” Saban added, according to Axios.
All of this is evident and glaringly obvious. Yet Biden remains unfazed by the evidence that he is playing a dangerous game by appeasing America’s enemies at the expense of its allies.
What a calamity.
Silence from Schumer
Reader John Farrell expresses astonishment at Chuck Schumer’s absence as Biden leaves Israel vulnerable. As an Irish Catholic grandfather with Jewish grandchildren, Farrell expects more support from New York’s Jewish senator. He criticizes Schumer for his silence in this critical time.
No Response from Nadler, Goldman
Reader Allan Tannenbaum echoes similar sentiments about Jewish lawmakers Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman, who have remained silent amidst pro-Hamas activities and Biden’s betrayal of Israel.
