Antonio Guterres, UN chief, removes a whistleblower of genocide – who should be next?

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is allowing the contract of Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, to lapse. The reason behind this decision seems to be her refusal to label Israel’s conflict with Hamas as “genocide.”

Nderitu is firm in her stance: Genocide only applies to acts aimed at wiping out an ethnic group through massacre.

This description does not match the IDF’s actions in Gaza, which prioritize minimizing civilian casualties.

However, Guterres, the UN bureaucracy, and numerous member states are keen on portraying it differently. The Secretary-General, a Portuguese socialist, along with High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk (who hesitates to call Hamas a terrorist group) have been criticizing Israel for over a year.

It is evident that Guterres is parting ways with Nderitu to bring in a genocide “expert” who will align with the narrative.

One additional task for President-elect Donald Trump: Inform the United Nations that Guterres and his associates must be replaced when his term concludes next year, or else US funding for the entire organization will cease.
