Any deal for migrant workers MUST include shutting the border to more

On the face of it, Gov. Hochul and Mayor Adams begging for expedited work permits so asylum-seeking migrants can get legal jobs is worthy of support.

The sooner New York taxpayers are no longer paying for hotels the better.

And let’s get some tax revenue from the thousands who are already working under the table in restaurants and on construction sites.

But any change in bureaucracy must, MUST, come with action at the southern border.

It’s a demand neither Hochul nor Adams made, but simply allowing migrants to work does not solve the problem of a nation absorbing millions of illegal migrants.

Despite the Biden administration’s rhetoric, thousands are still being waved into the country.

Whether they use the CBP One app or not, most don’t obviously don’t qualify for asylum — which is reserved for political or religious persecution, not economic opportunity. Yet they’re still let in for a court date that’s a decade away.

The idea that they will ever be deported, particular from a Democratic “sanctuary city,” is a farce.

If you let everyone work immediately with no consequences, it’s a flashing invitation to people around the world — come on in.

No, common sense is required. Asylum hearings in the future must be held in country of origin and not when they’re already here.

And outside the asylum system, immigration should use a point system to make sure enough professionals — doctors, engineers — are accepted as well as low-skilled workers.

Meanwhile, stop believing that “Congress has dropped the ball.”

The only thing Karine Jean-Pierre means when she says this is that Congress has not given mass amnesty to millions in the country illegally, as Biden desires.

If Biden had the will to enforce the border, he could do it tomorrow, himself. He just doesn’t want to.

The only way to pressure him into doing it is if enough Democrats like Adams and Hochul speak up.
