Biden boldly supports student-loan bailout despite Supreme Court dissent and taxpayer opposition
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Joe Biden’s unilateral attempt to cancel $400 billion in student loans, criticizing the president for overstepping his authority, he chose to push back and work with Congress to pass his agenda as required by the Constitution.
Or so you’d think.
Congress has repeatedly rejected Biden’s plans to shift the burden of millions of Americans’ student loan debt onto taxpayers. Nevertheless, rather than accepting defeat, the president continues his efforts to cancel the debt through various strategies, such as expanding income-based repayment systems and proposing sweeping forgiveness plans.
Under Biden’s latest proposal announced on Monday, approximately 25 million more Americans would receive student loan forgiveness, including interest cancellation for households earning up to $240,000 a year, forgiveness for long-time loan holders, and other targeted relief measures.
The White House stated, “President Biden from Day One has worked to fix the student loan system and make sure higher education is a ticket to the middle class — not a barrier to opportunity — because he knows that debt cancellation not only benefits borrowers, it benefits the entire economy.”
But the reality is far from what Biden claims. This continued push for student loan forgiveness is not about improving the economy or fixing the system. It’s a strategic move to win back young voters who have grown disillusioned with the administration over other issues, such as its stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
This intention is clear from the administration’s actions. Biden, Harris, Emhoff, and Cardona all made appearances in swing states to promote the initiative, highlighting the political motive behind the proposal.
By attempting to bypass the Supreme Court and Congress, Biden is essentially abusing the powers of his office to gain favor with young voters at the expense of taxpayers. However, this policy does not address the root issues of high tuition costs and may even exacerbate the problem.
Ultimately, Biden’s actions disregard the limits of his power and undermine the constitutional order, all while worsening the country’s actual problems. This misuse of funds and power for political gain is concerning and sets a dangerous precedent for the future.
Instead of focusing on genuine solutions, Biden’s approach seems more about securing votes than enacting meaningful change. As citizens, we should be wary of such tactics and demand accountability from our leaders.
