The families of 13 American service members who died during Joe Biden’s mishandled withdrawal from Afghanistan two years ago recently reemerged in the public consciousness. Mark Schmitz, the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, one of the fallen heroes, criticized the lack of accountability and the president’s failure to acknowledge their names publicly. Last week, the Gold Star families testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sharing their stories with dignity, anger, and ongoing pain. Unfortunately, their tragedy has largely been ignored by the media, suppressed in the memory, and buried in online searches. A new book, titled “Kabul, The Untold Story of Biden’s Fiasco and the American Warriors Who Fought to the End,” by former Army Capt. James Hasson and Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy, provides a thorough analysis of the mistakes made and the incompetence displayed during the Abbey Gate attack and the subsequent withdrawal. Despite recommendations to keep a small contingent of troops and maintain Bagram Air Base, President Biden ignored the advice, denied the untrustworthiness of the Taliban, and micromanaged the evacuation, endangering American troops and causing suffering to Afghan civilians. Specific warnings about an ISIS suicide bomber targeting Abbey Gate were disregarded, and Marine sniper Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews was denied permission to engage the suspect multiple times. Ultimately, al-Logari, a released prisoner, detonated a bomb near the Marines, resulting in the deaths of the 13 service members. The authors criticize the Biden administration for its refusal to acknowledge al-Logari and highlight President Biden’s incompetence and lack of empathy. His callous indifference towards the suffering demonstrated during the Kabul disaster stands in stark contrast to the supposed empathy he professed due to his personal tragedies. During the dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base, Biden’s focus on discussing his deceased son was seen as mawkish and insensitive. Schmitz confronted Biden, calling him a “disgrace to the nation” and criticizing his lack of accountability.
