Biden considers executive action on US-Mexico border: Letters to the Editor
The Issue: Reports President Biden is considering an executive order to close the US-Mexico border.
How effective would President Biden’s executive order be in limiting the number of migrant crossings to 4,000 per day (“Overdue order on border,” May 16)?
This translates to almost 1.5 million per year! Since reversing Trump’s immigration policies, millions of unvetted migrants have entered the country.
All President Biden has done during his term is leave a significant challenge for the next president.

What will happen if the number of migrants crossing the border remains at 3,999 a day? We will still be supporting millions of people a year in terms of food, clothing, education, housing, and medical expenses.
I fail to understand why the Biden administration believes this is a viable solution.

Our president has already permitted millions of illegal immigrants into America. We should not allow any more until the illegally immigrated individuals are deported, and the legally arrived immigrants become American citizens.

I am disappointed in Biden. He is facing two major issues – inflation, which affects both the wealthy and the less privileged. Biden should seek advice from a former Trump official to address these challenges, as inflation was lower when Trump left office.
The second issue is immigration. If Biden had a strategic approach, he should consider closing the border entirely with the military to solve the problem. There should be no hesitation even if the number of crossings drops below 4,000 a day.

There are now talks about an executive order to partially close the southern border and limit the number of migrants to “just” 4,000 a day.
Biden is essentially acknowledging that his border policies have negatively impacted the country since he assumed office. The necessity for this decision is a result of declining poll ratings. However, this action may not be effective at this stage and may provide Trump with more political ammunition.

President Biden is aware of his plummeting ratings and is now trying to boost his popularity by reducing the daily migrant crossings from Mexico into America to 4,000.
He previously claimed he lacked the authority to address the border crisis.

Only allowing 4,000 migrants per day, equating to 1.5 million annually? It’s a start, I suppose.

The Issue: Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s musical performance during a recent visit to Ukraine.
During a visit to Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken played Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” without paying attention to the lyrics, which are actually anti-American (“Rockin’ Blink is ‘tone-deaf’,” May 15).
He also indirectly supported the suspension of elections by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has restricted certain political opposition parties, taken control of the media, and closed Russian-affiliated churches.
Another failure in safeguarding democracy. It seems we are willing to compromise democratic principles in the name of protecting them.

In Kyiv, Blinken performed Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” on stage, seemingly oblivious to the message of the song, which protests American policies (“Rockin’ Blink is ‘tone-deaf’,” May 15).
He also tacitly endorsed the suppression of elections by President Zelensky, who has restricted certain political parties, controlled the media, and shut down Russian-affiliated churches.
Considering these actions, it raises questions about our commitment to democracy.
